Comparisons

Namaste!

At Ncell, the upgrade of the network continues as was the case during the whole year. Now we go to full Internet Protocol, MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), to have enough capacity for increasing traffic. Everything went well until Thursday; unfortunately, many of you experienced the hick up: one IP router got overloaded, due to some weird process in it. This caused a signaling problem between some switches and business support system. Domestic calls and sms were down for about two hours but data and international traffic was working normally. About 2 Million people mainly in Bagmati were affected. These kinds of things are pretty “normal” in the IP world; our competitor’s network was out for 18 hours in Norway last summer. BUT, these sorts of things should not happen! My sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused to our valued customers.

The big issue in overcharging is getting better. To make the prices and taxes transparent to you, we initially changed the charging mechanism in recharge cards in October 2011. Before, when you bought 100 Rupee card, you paid the ownership tax on top of it. The two rupee we transfered to tax authorities on behalf of you as ownership tax. It made 102. This additional Rs 2 gave way to the POS to charge to nearest round figure of Rs 5 (made 105), which was not correct and transparent. Nowadays we have reduced MRP with taxes to Rs 100 and you get a balance of 98.04 compared to Rs 100 earlier on your account. (100 minus 98.04 is the tax part which we pay to government). When we introduced the new scheme and MRP, some 60 % of the kiosks begun overcharging  5 rupees as a routine. The official commission for the channel has remained same all the time. We have had meetings with our distributors who control the dealers, and dealers further should control POS: they are committed to rectify this bad customer experience, and also the commission structure within the channel was changed so that POS get bigger stake of the total commission. At the same time, we have terminated 114 agreements with our authorized POS. Just to remind again: DO NOT PAY ANY EXTRA. 50 Rupee scratch card shall cost 50, 100 is 100 and so fort.

There has been quite a lot of feed back in many issues. Thank you for your comments. Based on also your feedback, you can now have the night rate to Sajilo tariff. Many of you compare prices with NTC. I have said in my earlier blog that we are two different kinds of operators: we at Ncell want to be very much quality oriented, whereas NTC seems to believe that price is the main value creator for customers. Good so. It is important to have alternatives for consumers to choose. At Ncell we try to bring you the best quality of Customer Experience, sometimes with higher prices; offering best quality with lowest prices would put us in insolvency in longer run. If you look at base tariffs only, our on net is NPR 1.99 per minute and NTC is offering 1.50 for the same. We upgraded our billing system in April and can offer variety of prices schemes instead: e.g. with Friends and Family service you can talk by .99 a minute. Lowest offers have been at the level of 0.50. What it comes to mobile internet, our data price is definitely higher than NTC’s but the real surfing speed is more than double.  And so on.  And not to forget cross subsidizing of NTC fixed-Mobile: you pay 53 paisa for NTC, every minute you call to their fixed line number. Unfortunately, we have to collect it from you and credit further to NTC. Unfair competition and extra charge for you all. But you are right, and as the network failure and some other stumbling has showed, we are not perfect. We keep on improving quality, customer experience and affordability of our services to you all.

You customers actually do the testimony and proof in practise that our concept and offering is best in the country: from the articles below (official figures from NTA) you can see that August-October we have got 70% of all new subscribers in Nepal. We have gained some 14 market share percent units increase in two years to make us neck to neck in ALL telephone services (GSM, CDMA, PSTN) with NTC. At GSM, we gained market leadership already in March 2011. Among the internet users, Ncell has 59 per cent of the market followed by Nepal telecom with 38 per cent, with GPRS, ADSL, Dial-Up and CDMA services counted all together. According to reports, cable operators (Subisu, WorldLink etc.) have 3% of the internet market.

Thank You, you valued Ncell customer!

  6. hey i don't find your comment box, so i comment here. i lost 3-4 ncell sim but i don't know the number of this sim, how can i block this sim? is there your system to block sim by name or citizenship. your staff told me it's not possible to block sim by the name, if someone make a fraud by this sim, who is the responsible?

  7. Terve Pasi,
It's a good idea to collect comments, opinions, feedback from potential customers. I feel proud to get in touch with through your blogs. I am surprised to see that Ncell has covered 59% of total potential internet users and a makret leader among telecom company in Nepal. I still remember the day when I bought meromobile sim card ( now Ncell) some 4 0r 5 years ago and Meromobile has just reached some 2 or 3 hundred thousand customer.Onnea Ncell!!!
As you mentioned Ncell has 59% of market share among customer using internet. Don't you think that there is great opportunity lying behind it. If Ncell addresses the need of these internet users, it will benefit Ncell and even it can help to cover greater market share. It will be a good idea to launch some internet tarrif instead of charging directly on the basis of Kb ( amount of data) used by the customers. Ncell offers RS 50, 100 and .... calling cards. It would be great if Ncell start offering prepaid data card similar to prepaid calling card or hybrid of both ( a card with both data tariff and calling tarrif). Its just an idea which I thought to share with you. Rest depends on you.

  9. Dear Prashant,
thank you for your comment. It is normal that sometimes network needs attention from us: power problems, optimisation, capacity etc. But it is not fair to compare one village to entire country. Our network is the best in Nepal! Please send your contact details to info@ncell.com.np so our teams can work with your issue.

  13. Dear Pasi,
I'm quite happy to see Ncell growing in our country and this all goes to all of Ncell team and their honesty and hard work, but I will like to suggest you to introduce couple of new features which should be very handy for all customers as well as in benifit for Ncell as well.
    1. Recharge with any bank cards,
It should save time and hassle for customer to going to the authorized reseller of recharge cards and customer can recharge their account day/night whenever they wish/want. This way Ncell itself acting as an reseller gets the profit of selling recharge cards so they can give customer some more credit or talking time when they recharge from cards.
    2. Account payment with credit/debit card
For postpaid account can we pay the monthly account balance with any credit card?
As I'm not in Nepal, I wish I could pay my family's monthly bill from here Australia with my credit card.
    3.Direct debit:
As Ncell is introducing some bundled plans than it might be a very good idea to direct debit their monthly bill from their account/cards without the hassle(if possible, depends upon the bank features, but I'm sure because of the rush in the market and lack of the time to the customer and it is a fast and efficient process bank and NCell will negotiate something soon about this matter.
    4. Ncell website
I didn't find Ncell website so much friendly as well as decorative. I wish Ncell's website would be much more user friendly and more interesting stuff so all of your valued user will atleast spend some minute looking for the information or new features.
It might be good idea to check website of telecom provider from other countries like here in Australia,
    Optus
    http://www.optus.com.au/home/
    Vodafone:
    http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/index.htm
    Telstra
    http://telstra.com.au/
    Virgin
    http://www.virgin.com/gateways/mobile/
And most importantly I wish I could buy new handset and service for my family from Ncell website whether prepaid or postpaid and they can pick up or whether Ncell charges me for delivery, its fine.

  16. Ncell is better but not best yet for me. I am facing poor signal indoor in my village. In comparision with NTC it is better. Regarding tariff I have no objection but it would be better to introduce per second pulse or atleast 10 second. I am Ncell user since 1526 days. NTC tariff may be low but they have increased pulse rate from 15 to 30 second which I feel very uneasy. It has also very very poor network, coverage, data. No proper information found on customer care. Once I had need of my security code and I asked and they told to contact the respective office with your original citizenship. If I had gone to office then sure they will just move me around and around. I just hate NTC.

  17. we are eagerly waiting for the unlimited usage of internet. the volume basis internet is really high cost in this age. when will n cell start unlimited plans for n cell connect...?if n cell start this plan it will surely gain the market much more better than now.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Dear Pasi,
I would like to say not to offer unlimited plans, as this will make traffic congestion and all user will affect. It may be a bitter truth that your Data Plans are really too higher, for this whatever reason you have. If NTC are charging Rs.0.10/100kb then now you are charging Rs.0.60/100kb. Yes, it is true that NTC don't have EDGE but are offering 3G. Your rate should have Rs.0.30/100kb. Your Data rate is too costly specially with smartphone users. If you say we have different data plans then that is also costly for us. I like to request you to make different plans according to 2G and 3G data. Why Data is too costly in Nepal with comparison to other countries? Other operator don't pay for spectrum, license and tax? They also buy equipment and install. I would like to say compare your network with leading operators like Airtel, Reliance not with the looser operator like NTC.

Decrease data rate for 3G to the minimum. Android phones keep on updating, autosyncing and mails are being pushed into the android phones making your present mobile data packages quite unaffordable. Please bring a solution for smartphone users. You gave me zte blade android 2.2 but i am relying on free wifi hotspot for full mobile usage. Your free 100MB mobile data was used up in two days.

  22. Dear NCELL Team,

I am always impressed by NCELLs extensive PR, its fance outlets and the new schemes which seem to be coming up every other day. My concern however is that all that does not match the services particularly in regard to the network capacity. I very frequently have to make 3 to 5 attempts to get a network just to make a phone call. I know that one operator is blaming this connection issue on the other but in the end it does not matter to your customer. I don't know how many hours i have spend so far on trying to make phone calls and i often wonder what people do in cases of emergencies. I would like to urge you to not forget the basic service which is a prompt and reliable connection for all users over all the innovation you are bringing here. Only if this is guaranteed you are really here for Nepal!

plz give amazin offer on New year like cheap call rate, reduce GPRS rate...
I think you must reduce voice tarrif.. Ncell to Ncell RS 1.20/min. Ncell-Other operators Rs 1.5/min or above...so that we can easily use Ncell
At last reduce PRBT monthly charge from this New year..

  24. Dear Pasi,
Glad to hear that you are taking your network standard to the next level and better grade than now. Your commitment to provide excellent services to the Ncell customers is really praiseworthy. It is good deed of yours so that we're getting excellent network connectivity in the town. I appreciate your such works for the betterment of network.
But the drawback in your telecom giant is that your services are very expensive, especially Ncell connect. I spend almost 10,000 MB using the data card in my laptop monthly. So, why can't you bring any offers to the customers like me? Your packages are really dearer than that of any other ISPs so that we have to compromise on internet using hours. You have world-class network but we are really restricted to use it to the fullest. Can't you remove your weird packages so that we can stay online 24/7 like in the developed nations? If you are touched by dissatisfaction, anger and complaints of your dear customers, make the packages larger and cheaper as the offer of upcoming BRAND NEW YEAR 2012. You may have known that worldlink is providing nice offers in the internet services for new year, which will definitely lure us, especially internetworms, if you don't bring any better packages in Ncell connect. This is because we are really fed up of the packages and charges in your internet service and also due to Broadlink and Worldlink being good ISPs and providing fast internet services in cheaper rate. I hope you can provide the packages like, 50GB, 75GB and 100GB for Rs.4000, Rs.6000 and Rs.7000 respectively inclusive of all applicable taxes so that we can say "Ncell here for Nepal to serve" instead of "Ncell here in Nepal to loot Nepalese".
    Hope you would consider this.

  26. I am too much frustrated with the network of ncell in Jhapa at chandragadi, like prashand said earlier. I have already complaint three times regarding the problem to the customer care, last time, one of the representatives gave a funny answer, "Sir, why don't you leave an application with your problem to nearest ncell centre". It was not my problem only, It was the problem of whole people residing in the headquarter of Jhapa district. The network was the best before 3g was added here, but after that its too much irritating, network goes and doesn't come until we restart our cell phone, I have complaint regarding the problem here in the blog too but I wonder why my comments are not appearing!
I have a humble request to the blog editor, you can hide my comment from the pubic, but please let Mr Pasi read my comment.

You have introduce BlackBerry in the market. This isone of the great service u provide. But BlackBerry is mostly used for bussiness proposes. Young generations donot prefer Blackberry much. So i hope That you would Think for young generation also.

  29. dear pasi,
i went through your blog and found that ncell will be investing 100 million dollor(7.5 billion rupees) in course of time. i am really interested in knowing that had ncell already the whole amount or just part of it.
It would be great to put up ncell's financials on company's website. Whole nepal knows about 100 million dollor investment plan and very few people know that in year 2011,ncell will be making in around 25 billion of rupees(320 million usd)as revenue. I am sure its
    more then that.
We have heard nothing on investment part in 2012 but as for the revenue part,it will be somewhere close to 50 billion rupees(more then 600 million usd).
as a common nepalese i was eager to know, how much of that money is being invested back(with figures of course),the income tax(other tax's end payers are the public) and what percentage of the revenue was shared with your channel partners.
i would have liked to write more but only after your answers.

Please revise your ridiculous internet tariff. You are selling 500mb data for near about 500 Rs with taxes, tell me if its not the most expensive internet tariff in the world.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous asked about financials. Hope we could make those kind of numbers:) Fiscal year 2011 (mid July according Nepali month) will be around 17 B NPR in revenues. Once the audit is done in a month or so, the numbers will be public. Directly or indirectly, taxes are around 50% of that.

  32. Dear Rajendra,
thank you for your comment. Handset bundled offers are quite tricky in Nepal. Due to unexistence of credit control, there is not proper way to make sure that we'd get the installments to cover the cost of the phone. We launched an offer called Ncell Pro where you can select from different handsets and tariff scheme on it combined.

  36. What about unlimited data plans.. Almost every isp in nepal has that plan.. Why not ncell?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Dear Pasi,
Why are you turning Deaf ear to your valued and genuine customers? You really have better capacity than any other ISPs in the country for internet services. You have MPLS technology which is used by renowned ISPs like worldlink, Subisu, broadlink, etc. So, I think there would be no any such problem in network traffic in NCELL in providing larger data packages of 50GB, 75GB and 100GB in cheaper rates. The wi-fi router introduced by you is suitable for none of Nepalese if you don't provide larger data packages in cheaper rates. I urge you not to provide unlimited package because we may go for downloading games, movies and softwares unnecessarily like 10GB in a single day. This will definitely make your network slow and undermine the popularity of Ncell.
And, I want you to know that those customers who want larger and cheaper data packages are not the addicts of social networking sites, instead they are researchers, who are pursuing their Ph.D, IT students and international students. So, why don't you get proud that you have such brilliant minds using your services?
Lastly, I want to remind you that lowering the price of data packages doesn't cause your company any losses instead makes your profit to get many folds because of rapid increase in your customer no. and data usage.
Hoping positive result from you on the auspicious occasion of Christmas and the new year 2012.

With ncell 50 rupees balance i was not able to use internet even a day but now with ntc i can be online 24x7 on nimbuzz, facebook, twitter, post comment on facebook and blog, and at the end of the day my balance is reduced maximum 5-10 rupees per day.

  42. Hello Pasi,
Its good to hear from you and a good step as a CEO to publish your statement via blog to understand what customers are going through. I am a Nepal Telcom user and I do have SIM of NCell to use it while I go to remote places and thank you for a good and satisfied network in compared to Nepal Telcom. I would be much happier if Nepal Government work on Number Portability which will ease customer to switch to their desired Telcos easily.

In addition, I also want to keep my suggestion on not bringing heaps of plans on data and voice which are confusing Nepalese community. 70% of the Nepalese community are not good aware of the plans that Ncell brings every now and then. The plans should be simple and easy to understand. I worked in Telcom Field from last 10 years and the understanding between customers and Telcos should be always simple.
Beside that, you should be thinking of offloading your 3 G traffic to Wifi from now otherwise Ncell would be facing a congestion issue as NTC is facing . We have a good example in our Neighbouring Country like India and China where Telcos has started offloading their traffic to WI FI. If you have to reply my comment please reply on my email instead of the blog since I dont usually check the blog.

Good luck and have a good stay in Nepal.
