GSMA

Namaste! It was a great day with the launch of Ncell Pro which hopefully helps Nepalese to get to the next level of quality communications: we introduced a bundle package with the latest models of favourite 3G phones. You buy one of the phones you like and it comes fully loaded with SIM card, talk time and sms plus data package with some other goodies. Ramro cha!

Other recent highlight in the international mobile industry has been the nomination of TeliaSonera's President and CEO Mr. Lars Nyberg as a member of the board of GSMA. GSM Association is the main common body of operators, representing some 800 operators around the world in many development issues of the industry. Main event of the family, GSM World is held yearly in February at the beautiful city of Barcelona. But main achievements of GSMA has been the specs of GSM technology some 25 years ago. Actually, GSMA was born around the initiative of some Nordic companies who then run technology called Nordic Mobile Telefony (NMT). It was funny in the sence that when I drove with my car to other Nordic country, I had to switch to the country network. As we all do today. Thanks to Telia, Sonera, Ericsson,Nokia and couple of other companies for beeing innovative and seeing the needs for mobile communications. Actually, SMS was invented as a kind of signaling channel for network operations but mobile users widely started using the 160 characters to communicate each other: the big boom in Finland begun during the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1995. It was easy to send the scores and results to your friends not beeing present at the gallery, and naturally cost effectively. The father of the SMS is said to be Mr. Matti Makkonen, who worked at Finnish operator called Sonera as an engineer during those times.

Naturally all the nice things like roaming, interconnection to mention few have been developed between operators in multinational working groups. Couple of years ago I had an oppotunity to be part of mobile money initiative with operators, banks and handset manufactures. The initiative is about how to enable functionality of your everyday wallet in the mobile phone. How does it supposed to work? Well, the electronic wallet is an application in the SIM card, the information is transmitted to the wireless chip in the phone and you can pay your groceries by waving the phone close to the payment terminal of the point of sales. Money is deducted form your bank account or credit card, according your choice. Might be that in couple of years this could be mainstream like GSM...

  1. Ncell should start SUPPORT on Twitter like BlackBerry .. Guess Twitter is a nice way to stay in Sync with the Customers and Give them the information they ask for .. Ncell should get started with Blackberry App world in Nepal... 3G service on Ncell is Very Good but the EDGE service isn't working like before .. When the Data Card is on EDGE network i can't open a Basic Web Page and have complained the same to the Customer Care and nothing has Improved actually ... Its the same when your Blackberry is on EDGE network .. Ncell Pro is a nice Initiative.

  4. Why is there so much discrimination between new users of Ncell and Older ones ?? There are lot of offers for newer ones but not for those who are using Ncell for longer period of time and being loyal to them??When will Ncell think about older Ncell users and bring some exciting offers? And Since Nepals greatest National festival Dashin and Tihar are coming what newer offers and plans are being brought in near future???

  5. Kindly consider adding free minutes and decreasing free sms in ur plus and premium plans because we nepalese harldy use sms as a mode of communication. One is never sure whether his sms is being read or not. So increase the number of free voice minutes.

  6. Data Card (Ncell Connect is nice but i have not experienced the speed as i have heard of it lot. My normal speed reaches upto 500 to 600 Kb/s. and once it reached upto 1Mb/s. And I want to ask why Ncell is focusing its 3G network only around Kathmandu. I think Ncell is being too slow to expand its network to the western part of Nepal...

  8. Dear Pasi ji,
I'm preety much impressed by the services as well as your costumer care services. But only Thing I want to comment about Ncell is its data services.
Ncell data connections are really best as compared to other operators in Nepal but yet its pricing are really high in Nepalese context.
I won't say you to provide unlimited internet, but please reduce your data rates.NTC has recently initiated the reduction on data tariffs by providing it for Rs 1.024 per MB.
I think Ncell should surprise its subscribers by reducing on its data tariffs on normal and connect packages, maybe as a dashain offer.
And please do care about old subscribers too.All your offers and plans are for New subscribers only.

  9. Ncell's data plan is really costly for student who surf internet a lot... It would be better if ncell brings unlimited data plan and some scheme for student... I hope it will bring an affordable data scheme for students...

  10. Where is the unlimited data plan for mobile devices??? I would pay Rs. 5,000 if I could browse unlimited 3G internet via my mobile phone.
Bring some unlimited data packages just like Aircel is bringing in India.
